Cement Screeding and Self Levelling FAQs

What is Cement Screeding?

Cement Screeding is the process of applying a layer of cement and sand mix to a concrete floor to create a smooth, level surface. It is commonly used in preparation for laying tiles, carpets, or other types of flooring.

What is Self Levelling?

Self Levelling is a specialized cement mix that is designed to flow and level itself out to create a smooth, level surface. It is commonly used in situations where the existing floor is uneven or to level out small imperfections in the concrete.

How long does Cement Screeding and Self Levelling process take to dry?

The drying time for Cement Screeding and Self Levelling Process depends on a variety of factors, such as the thickness of the layer, the temperature and humidity of the environment. Typically, it can take anywhere from 1-3 days for the screed to dry completely.

How thick should a screed be?

Screeds are normally laid to achieve a desired level to prepare the floor to receive the specified finishes. In this case, the screed thickness shall be the required thickness to achieve this desired level.

What is difference between Cement Screeding and Self Levelling?

Although they both have similar functions to level the substrate, the selection on which to use will depend on the application. Screed mortars are normally laid to receive tile and stone finishes and the mix consistency of the mortar is such that the application is normally done by hand or manually floated to obtain the desired level. The mix consistency of self-levelling products are more fluid and designed to self-flow and achieve a more accurate level vinyl adhesive to receive resilient finishes such as vinyl, carpet and engineered wood flooring.

Do you need to seal the self levelling compound?

It depends whether you are doing an underlayment or overlayment. If you are using self-leveling as an underlayment, then it will normally be covered with a final finish such as vinyl, carpet, wood or tile. If you are laying an overlayment, then you will need to protect its surface finish with sealing products or resin flooring.

Why does Screed crack?

The occurrence of cracks for self-leveling screed can be due to a variety of reasons - shrinkage, movement etc.

What are the advantages of using cement screeding and self-levelling over traditional floor leveling methods?

Cement screeding or self-levelling provides a quicker, more efficient, and more precise method of leveling floors compared to traditional methods. It also eliminates the need for extensive surface preparation, resulting in a smoother and more uniform finish.

Can cement screeding or self-levelling be used for outdoor applications?

Yes, cement screeding or self-levelling can be used for outdoor applications such as balconies, patios, or walkways.

Is it necessary to remove existing flooring materials before applying cement screeding and self-levelling?

It depends on the condition of the existing surface and the requirements of the flooring material to be installed. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove the existing flooring material to ensure proper adhesion of the cement mix, while in other cases, the cement mix can be applied directly on top of the existing surface.
