PU Faux Beam FAQs

What is a PU faux wood beam? +

A decorative beam that creates the appearance of timber without using a solid structural wood beam. Ours are made as a custom U-shaped profile — three finished faces that fit over your ceiling — designed for decorative ceiling and interior applications.

What does "PU" mean? +

Polyurethane. It is moulded and finished to reproduce the appearance and texture of timber, and is used here as an interior decorative element.

Is it made from real wood? +

No. It is a faux wood product that reproduces the look of timber, giving you a rustic or architectural wood-beam finish without installing solid timber.

Is the PU beam structural? +

No. It is a decorative architectural feature, not a load-bearing beam. It must never be used to support any structural load.

Can I mount a ceiling fan or hanging light on the beam? +

No. The beam cannot carry the weight or the movement of a fan, and heavier hanging lights should not be fixed to it either. If a fan sits within your beam design, it needs its own structural fixing to the ceiling structure, independent of the beam.

Is the beam solid or hollow? +

It is a hollow U-shaped profile, open at the back. This is what allows it to be fitted over a support frame and, where properly planned, to conceal certain services.

Does it actually look like real timber? +

It is designed to produce a convincing wood-beam appearance, with visible timber-style grain and irregular texture. The final realism depends on the model, colour, lighting and viewing distance you choose.

What size are the beams? +

Beams are made to order. Dimensions are quoted as Height × Width × Height × Length, matching the three faces of the U-profile — for example, 100mm × 150mm × 100mm.

Can I choose my own width and depth? +

Yes. Beams are custom-fabricated to your dimensions, subject to manufacturing feasibility. Send us your intended size and we will confirm it before ordering.

What is the standard beam length? +

2400mm per piece. Runs longer than 2400mm require more than one piece.

What happens if my ceiling run is longer than 2400mm? +

Multiple pieces are used and there will be a joint line where they meet. Plan the joint position as part of the design rather than leaving it to chance.

Can the joint be made completely invisible? +

Not completely. Where pieces are connected, a joint line may remain slightly visible depending on texture, colour and viewing angle. Our installers position and finish it as neatly as possible.

Can a faux iron strap cover the joint? +

Decorative faux iron straps are a popular option and are often placed at joint positions, where they read as a design detail rather than a repair. How well a strap conceals a particular connection depends on the beam design and where the joint falls, so the strap positions should be planned together with the beam layout.

Do I need a false ceiling to install PU beams? +

Not necessarily. The beam is itself the ceiling feature. The installation method depends on your existing ceiling and mounting condition.

Can beams be installed directly onto an HDB ceiling? +

Yes, depending on the installation detail and ceiling condition. The final mounting method and any drilling requirements are checked against the actual site before installation.

At what stage of my renovation should I plan the beams? +

Before your lighting positions and final ceiling layout are locked in. This matters most if you want downlights or other fittings installed through the beams.

Can beams be installed after my renovation is completed? +

Yes. It is simply easier when planned during renovation, because ceiling lights, wiring, fans and built-in carpentry can be coordinated around the beam layout rather than worked around afterwards.

Can I add beams after I have already moved in? +

Yes. Adding them during renovation is easier for the same reason — lighting, electrical points and ceiling layout can all be planned together.

Can lights be installed inside a PU beam? +

Yes. We cut light openings into the beam and can install the fittings for you. Give us the light fitting model and dimensions before fabrication, as openings are cut to your specific fitting and must clear the beam edges and joints.

Can downlights run along the beam? +

Yes, provided the beam dimensions, fitting size, electrical points and hole positions are coordinated beforehand.

Can electrical wiring run inside the beam? +

Yes. The U-profile creates internal space for the lighting wiring. The wiring route and light positions should be agreed before the beams are fabricated.

Are PU faux beams suitable for BTO and HDB homes? +

Yes, as a decorative ceiling feature. Plan the beam layout together with your lighting, fan and ceiling design so the finished room does not look visually crowded.

Where are PU beams normally installed? +

  • Living rooms
  • Dining areas
  • Open-plan living and dining spaces
  • Bedrooms
  • Feature ceilings
  • Entrances
  • Commercial interiors
Living and dining ceilings are the most popular applications.

Can I use beams in a bedroom? +

Yes, subject to your preferred style and ceiling height. Lighter wood tones or fewer beams create a less visually heavy effect in smaller rooms.

Can they be used in a dining area? +

Yes. Dining areas work particularly well when the beam arrangement is coordinated with the dining table and the pendant or ceiling lighting.

Are PU beams affected by termites? +

Polyurethane is not timber, so it is not a food source for termites in the way natural wood is. Note that beams are fitted over a timber support frame, so normal termite precautions for your home still apply.

Are the beams affected by water? +

Polyurethane does not absorb water or swell the way natural timber does, which makes the beams well suited to Singapore's humidity. They are still an interior product — for bathrooms, balconies or any location with direct water exposure, please check with us first.

Are PU faux beams fire-resistant? +

Fire performance depends on the specific product grade supplied. For commercial, F&B or other regulated premises, please request the fire documentation from us before specifying, as those projects may be subject to fire-safety requirements that a residential installation is not.

How do I clean PU faux beams? +

Remove surface dust with a soft dry cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, solvents and scouring pads, which can damage the printed timber finish.

What warranty do PU faux beams come with? +

PU faux beams are covered by a 10-year product warranty against manufacturing defects, covering abnormal cracking, warping and material failure under normal indoor use.

The warranty does not cover:

  • Impact damage, misuse or accidental damage
  • Water damage, or use in bathrooms, balconies or other locations outside the approved indoor application
  • Loads applied to the beam, including ceiling fans and hanging fittings
  • Alteration, drilling or repainting carried out by others after installation
  • Damage caused by other trades or by third-party electrical work
  • Beams installed by a party other than PanelCraft — supply-only orders carry the product warranty only
